A SIP trunk is a virtual version of an analogue phone line. Using SIP trunks, a SIP provider can connect one, two, or twenty channels to your PBX, allowing you to make local, long distance, and international calls over the Internet. The main difference in their capability is that VoIP is limited to transferring voice data over the internet whereas a SIP trunk can transfer packets of multimedia data. This could be voice, text or video.
